I first began painting in my 20s at the Art League
of Alexandria, VA, and have been
involved in the visual arts since—throughout
a communications career in Washington, DC, motherhood, and living
on the West Coast for a number of years. My earliest paintings
were plein air landscapes, painted on site in beautiful
places that inspired me in Virginia, California and France.
The study of art has been a lifelong endeavor through museums, college
classes, and workshops. I have studied the painting techniques
of the Old Masters at the college level and painted still life, landscapes
and portraits in that style. I have also created paintings
using only pure color and palette knife in the style of Claude Monet
and have had fun working with conceptual art and minimalism. While
all these methods inform my painting and while I love to paint in
these styles as well, I suppose I currently see myself as an “expressionistic” painter.
Painting allows me to let my intuition run free while
I strive for mastery of the materials and tools of the artist in
expression. With
color, value, line, surface and composition, I work to create
both movement and balance—an easy flow that encompasses a central
focus. I begin a painting with an idea. I let the painting tell me
when it is finished.
My paintings can be seen in Alexandria at the Torpedo
Factory in The Art League Gallery and the Bin Gallery; and at Alexandria
City Hall and the Montebello Community Center.
